Toll Gate Open Space Xeriscape Project

In celebration of World Water Day on March 22, we are thrilled to announce an exciting new project that will not only enhance the beauty of our beloved park but also promote sustainability and environmental consciousness. Starting this May, the open space to the East of Toll Gate Park (the stretch along South Picadilly Street, across the street from Pioneer Park) will undergo a transformation as we start a xeriscape project aimed at replacing the traditional bluegrass fields with native plant landscapes.

This process, known as xeriscaping, will help us create a more ecologically balanced and resilient outdoor space; xeriscaping is a landscaping approach that utilizes native plants and emphasizes water conservation.

Here’s a glimpse into what you can expect from this Toll Gate Xeriscape Master Plan!

Explaining the Toll Gate Master Plan

1. Native Plant Landscapes:

The Tollgate Xeriscape renovation will display a full design of drought tolerant and native shrub and tree species as well as native ornamental grasses, forbs, and perennials to promote water conservation and improve wildlife habitat along the recreational trail and entrance to Toll Gate Park. Gone will be the expanses of bluegrass, replaced by vibrant arrays of native plants indigenous to this Colorado region. These plants are well-adapted to our climate, requiring minimal water and maintenance once established. Not only will this transition conserve water resources, but it will also provide a habitat for local wildlife, fostering biodiversity within the park.

2. Water Conservation:

By transitioning to xeriscaping, we aim to significantly reduce the park’s water consumption. Native plants are naturally drought-tolerant, requiring far less irrigation compared to traditional grass lawns. This not only conserves water but also lowers utility costs associated with park maintenance, allowing us to allocate resources more efficiently.

3. Aesthetic Appeal:

Far from being barren or dull, xeriscapes offer a stunning tapestry of colors, textures, and seasonal interest. From vibrant wildflowers to majestic grasses, the new landscape will be a visual delight for park visitors throughout the year. Additionally, the reduction of mowed turf areas will create a more naturalistic and inviting environment, perfect for leisurely strolls, picnics, and outdoor recreation. Soft surface trails will meander throughout the landscape and a couple of rest benches will be added to provide park goers a location to take a break and enjoy nature.

4. Long-Term Sustainability:

Our commitment to sustainability extends beyond the immediate benefits of the xeriscape project. By embracing xeriscaping principles, we are investing in the long-term health and vitality of all of the parks and open spaces at Trails Park and Recreation District. The reduced water usage, lower maintenance requirements, and enhanced ecological resilience will ensure that Toll Gate Park remains a cherished community asset for generations to come.

“As a horticulturist, I love this project for the purpose of removing non-native turf grass, which requires large amounts of water and maintenance, to bring in native and drought tolerant plants,” Sean Bowering, Trails Park and Recreation District’s Parks Manager said. “After the  establishment period, these plants will need very little water and will continue to look beautiful for the community. It’s nice to be able to begin building a healthy habitat for wildlife as well as an interactive landscape for the public to enjoy.”

We are incredibly excited to embark on this journey toward a more sustainable and resilient future for Trails Park and Recreation District. This project would also not be possible without the support provided by Arapahoe County Open Space.
