Is a Rec Center Membership Worth It? A Cost Breakdown

Published: Saturday, June 13, 2026.

If you’ve ever stood at the front desk of the Trails Recreation Center (or any rec center, really), wondering whether to pay the daily admission or finally commit to a membership, you’re not alone. It’s one of the most common questions we hear, and the answer isn’t the same for everyone. The right option depends on a few key factors: how often you plan to visit, whether you live within our district boundaries, and whether you prefer flexibility or long-term savings. Let’s break down our membership options so you can make the smartest choice for your budget and your lifestyle.

First Things First: Are You a Resident or Non-Resident?

Before comparing any prices, you need to know whether you live within the Trails Park and Recreation District (TPRD) boundaries. This distinction matters — a lot. Residents pay lower rates across every single option, from daily drop-ins to annual memberships. That’s because district residents already contribute to the rec center through property taxes, so they receive a discounted rate as part of that investment (sometimes called an “in-district discount”).

Not sure if you’re in the district? You can check the TPRD District Map on our website, use ArapaMAP to search your property taxes and see if you pay a fee to Trails Park and Recreation District, or call the rec center’s front desk and ask. If you live outside district boundaries, you’re still absolutely welcome; you just won’t receive the in-district discount.

With that in mind, let’s walk through every access option available.

Your Options at a Glance

Daily Admission

Daily admission is the most flexible option; no commitment, no upfront cost. You pay per visit and walk right in. Here’s what that looks like for adults ages 18–61:

  • Resident: $7.00 per visit
  • Non-Resident: $9.25 per visit

Youth (ages 3–17), seniors (62+), and active military members pay slightly less:

  • Resident: $6.50 per visit
  • Non-Resident: $8.25 per visit

If you’re bringing the whole crew, a household daily rate (up to 5 people) is available at $24.00 for residents and $30.00 for non-residents, with each additional household member adding just $3.25.

Daily admission is great for occasional visitors, like someone stopping in for a swim on a hot afternoon or a visitor in town for the week. But if you’re coming more than a handful of times per month, paying per visit adds up fast.

Punch Pass (20 Visits)

The punch pass sits in the middle ground between daily drop-ins and a full membership. You pre-purchase 20 visits at a discounted per-visit rate, and use them whenever you like!

Here’s what a 20-visit punch pass costs:

Adult (18–61):

  • Resident: $85.00 ($4.25/visit)
  • Non-Resident: $105.50 ($5.28/visit)

Youth (3–17), Senior (62+), or Active Military:

  • Resident: $68.00 ($3.40/visit)
  • Non-Resident: $89.00 ($4.45/visit)

Compared to daily admission, a punch pass saves residents about $2.75 per adult visit. That’s meaningful if you’re coming regularly but not ready to lock in a full membership.

Monthly Membership

The monthly membership is the no-commitment recurring option. You pay month to month, and there’s no contract — cancel anytime with no fee (membership continues until a cancellation request is received).

Individual:

  • Resident: $37.00/month
  • Non-Resident: $44.50/month

Household (2 people):

  • Resident: $64.00/month
  • Non-Resident: $75.00/month
  • Additional household members: $7.00/month (resident or non-resident)

At $37/month for a resident adult, you’re getting unlimited access to the entire facility. If you visit just six times in a month, you’ve already beaten the daily rate. Come more, and the value only increases.

Annual Membership

The annual membership offers the best per-visit value for frequent visitors, but it comes with a one-year commitment. If you cancel within the year, there’s a $50 cancellation fee. You can pay the full amount upfront or break it into monthly installments.

Individual:

  • Resident: $380.00/year ($31.66/month)
  • Non-Resident: $445.00/year ($37.08/month)

Household (2 people):

  • Resident: $636.00/year ($53.00/month)
  • Non-Resident: $763.00/year ($63.58/month)
  • Additional household members: $85.00/year ($7.08/month) for residents; $95.00/year ($7.92/month) for non-residents

The annual membership also comes with a special perk: the Buddy Pass. Introduced in January 2025, all annual members receive four free guest passes per year to bring a friend at no charge. That alone can offset a portion of the annual cost.

The Real Question: How Often Are You Coming?

This is where the math gets interesting. Let’s use a resident adult as our example and walk through the break-even points.

Daily admission vs. Punch Pass: At $7.00/visit for daily admission versus $4.25/visit on a punch pass, you save $2.75 per visit with the punch pass. The punch pass costs $85.00 upfront, so if you know you’ll use at least 12–13 visits, the punch pass has already paid for itself compared to paying daily for those same visits. The punch pass makes sense if you come somewhat regularly but not frequently enough to justify a membership.

Punch Pass vs. Monthly Membership: A monthly membership runs $37.00/month with unlimited visits. A punch pass gives you 20 visits for $85.00. If you use those 20 visits within a month or two, the monthly membership quickly becomes the better deal. Specifically, if you’re visiting the rec center 9 or more times per month, a monthly membership at $37 is cheaper than burning through punch passes at $4.25/visit.

Monthly vs. Annual Membership: The annual membership saves you about $5.34/month compared to the monthly rate ($31.66 vs. $37.00 for residents). Over a year, that’s a savings of $64. If you’re a consistent, year-round visitor, the annual membership wins — but only if you’ll stick with it. The $50 cancellation fee is something to keep in mind if your schedule is unpredictable.

A Quick Visual Guide: Which Option Fits You?

Here’s a simple way to think about it based on your visit frequency as a resident adult:

1–3 visits per month: Daily admission or punch pass — no need to commit.

4–8 visits per month: Punch pass is your sweet spot. You’ll save significantly over daily rates without the monthly obligation.

9+ visits per month: Monthly membership ($37/month) is almost certainly your best value.

9+ visits per month, consistently, year-round: Annual membership ($380/year = $31.66/month) saves you the most over time (and you get the Buddy Pass perk).

For non-residents, the same logic applies, just with slightly higher numbers at each tier. An adult non-resident paying $9.25/visit daily will hit the punch pass break-even faster, making the $105.50 punch pass worth it after just 12 visits compared to daily rates.

Don't Forget What's Included

No matter which access option you choose, admission to the Trails Recreation Center covers a remarkable amount of space and amenities. Your visit includes use of the leisure and lap pools, lazy river, waterslides, hot tub, steam room, sauna, cardio equipment, free weights, circuit weight machines, running track, gymnasium, racquetball courts, and the climbing wall. Drop-in group fitness classes are also included with admission, though you must register to save your spot in a class.

That’s a lot of value for one facility. When you compare the per-visit cost against what a private gym or pool-only club might charge, the Trails Rec Center holds up very well.

It’s worth noting that programs, leagues, lessons, and specialty classes found in our Trail Guide Catalog are priced separately. So, if you’re planning to add swim lessons or join an adult sports league on top of your general access, factor that into your overall budget.

Scholarship Assistance Is Available

We want access to the Trails Recreation Center to be possible for everyone in our community. If cost is a barrier, TPRD offers a scholarship program for reduced-rate facility passes and programs for those who qualify. You can pick up an application at the front desk or email us ([email protected]) to get the process started.

So, Is a Membership Worth It?

For most people who visit regularly (say, two or three times a week) yes, a membership is absolutely worth it. An annual membership at $31.66/month for a resident adult is one of the most affordable access points you’ll find for a full-service recreation facility anywhere in the Denver metro area.

If you’re on the fence, the monthly membership is a great low-risk way to test it out. Come as often as you want for a month, see how it fits your routine, and then decide if locking in an annual makes sense.

If your visits are more sporadic (like once or twice a month) a punch pass gives you the best of both worlds: a lower per-visit cost without any ongoing commitment.

The bottom line is simple: the more you come, the more a membership pays off. And with everything the Trails Recreation Center has to offer, there are plenty of reasons to keep coming back.
