The Trails Recreation Center: Facility Refresh

The Trails Recreation Center: Facility Refresh

For more than two decades, the Trails Recreation Center (TRC) has been a place where our community gathers to move, play, learn, and connect. Since opening its doors in 2004, the Trails Rec Center has welcomed thousands of families, individuals, and groups through its doors, with over 1,000 visits each day. From fitness classes and swimming lessons to youth sports and community events, the facility has become a cornerstone of daily life for residents in our area.

We’ve worked hard to keep the center clean, safe, and well maintained. But after 20 years of constant use, it’s time for a refresh. We’re excited to share the beginning of a multi-year renovation project! This project will ensure that the Trails remains a high-quality, welcoming space for our community for the next generation.

Why a Refresh?

Much like a home that has served its family well for many years, the Trails Recreation Center has areas that are showing their age. Flooring has endured countless footsteps, locker rooms have weathered years of daily use, and community spaces that once felt fresh and modern now feel dated compared to today’s standards.

Rather than simply making small repairs here and there, we’re taking this opportunity to step back, plan thoughtfully, and invest in significant updates that will keep TRC relevant and inviting for the next 20 years.

To help us do this, we’ve partnered with Ohlson Lavoie Collaborative (OLC Designs)—the original architect of the facility. OLC brings not only a deep understanding of the center’s design and flow, but also fresh ideas that reflect today’s recreational needs and design trends.

What’s Included in the Plan?

The Trails Recreation Center Facility Refresh project will roll out in phases over the next 2–3 years to minimize disruption while maximizing impact; we’ll update this timeline blog throughout the project.

Phase I

  • Lobby Seating – Have you noticed some new seating in the Lobby? The new couch and tables were the first part of phase 1 of our refresh project! Don’t they look great?
  • Conference Room Conversion – The existing conference room will be transformed into two offices to help meet growing staff space needs.
  • Game Room Transformation – The former “game room” will be reimagined as a new conference space. This room will host community meetings, programs, and small events, creating new opportunities for groups to gather at TRC.

Future Phases (over the next several years)

While Phase I focuses on immediate needs for staff and community meeting space, future phases will bring a major refresh throughout the facility, including:

  • Multipurpose Rooms & Studios – Updates to Conestoga, Gold Rush & Kitchen, Wagon Wheel, Aerobics Room, Gymnasium, and Fitness Floors.
  • Fresh Finishes – New flooring, paint, and lighting throughout the center.
  • Welcoming First Impression – A refreshed lobby and front desk area designed to feel open, bright, and welcoming.
  • Renovated Locker Rooms & Restrooms – Improved lighting, new vanities, partitions, and modern finishes.
  • Childcare Area Updates – A refreshed childcare space with improved finishes and storage to better serve families.

What to Expect During Construction

We know our members rely on TRC for their daily workouts, classes, and programs, which is why the Refresh Project will be carefully phased to minimize disruptions.

  • Construction will begin soon on Phase I. While some areas may be temporarily unavailable, the majority of the facility will remain open and fully operational.
  • Future improvements will roll out in stages, with thoughtful scheduling designed to avoid closing large portions of the facility at once.
  • Regular Updates – We’ll provide updates throughout the process so you know what’s happening, what to expect, and when to look forward to new spaces opening.

Your patience and support during this time mean the world to us. Every temporary inconvenience is an investment in a brighter, fresher future for TRC.

Looking Ahead

We’re excited to embark on this journey and can’t wait for you to experience the improvements as they unfold. Together, we’ll celebrate each milestone and enjoy the transformation of TRC into a facility that is not only functional but inspiring.

Stay Connected

This blog is the first in a series of updates. As construction progresses, we’ll share photos, progress notes, and reminders so you can follow along every step of the way.

Thank you for being part of the Trails Recreation Center community. Here’s to the next 20 years—and beyond—at TRC!
