Year-Round Park Restrooms!
Great news for park lovers! The Trails Park and Recreation District (TPRD) is excited to announce that the restrooms at Piney Creek Hollow Park and Spring Creek Park are now available year-round. In the past, these restrooms were closed during the winter months to protect plumbing systems from freezing temperatures. Starting this year (2025), however, visitors will have access to these facilities throughout every season — from snowy winter mornings to warm summer evenings.
Restrooms will be open daily from 5:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., consistent with park hours, and will be checked regularly by our Parks Team to ensure they remain clean, safe, and welcoming.
A Small Change with a Big Impact
For many residents, this may seem like a small update — but for regular park users, it’s a big deal. Whether you’re out for an early-morning jog in January, playing soccer at Spring Creek Park in March, or taking your kids to the playground at Piney Creek Hollow Park on a cool fall day, having restroom access makes your visit more convenient and comfortable.
This improvement reflects one of TPRD’s ongoing goals: to make our parks accessible, enjoyable, and accommodating all year long.
Until now, restrooms were winterized and closed when temperatures dropped to prevent frozen pipes and plumbing damage. Visitors often had to cut visits short or plan around limited amenities. But thanks to new facility upgrades and careful planning, both parks are now equipped to handle year-round use.
How We Made Year-Round Restrooms Possible
Operating restrooms during Colorado’s coldest months requires more than just keeping doors unlocked — it takes thoughtful design, ongoing maintenance, and behind-the-scenes work from our Parks Team.
To prepare the buildings for year-round operation, TPRD made several key improvements, including:
- Winterizing plumbing systems to protect pipes from freezing temperatures.
- Adding improved insulation and ventilation, maintaining more consistent interior conditions.
- Installing efficient heating components that keep plumbing safe while conserving energy.
- Implementing a year-round inspection and cleaning schedule, ensuring the facilities stay comfortable and functional every day of the year.
Thanks to these upgrades, park restrooms at Piney Creek Hollow Park and Spring Creek Park are now durable enough to withstand Colorado winters — without sacrificing comfort or cleanliness.
A Note About Drinking Fountains
While restrooms will remain open through all seasons, drinking fountains will continue to be closed during winter months to prevent freezing and potential equipment damage.
We encourage park visitors to bring their own reusable water bottles during this time, especially when engaging in physical activities like walking, running, or playing sports. Drinking fountains will reopen in the spring once temperatures consistently remain above freezing.
Where to Find These Facilities
If you’re planning a visit and want to know where to find the restrooms:
- Piney Creek Hollow Park: The restroom building is conveniently located near the parking area and playground, making it easily accessible for families, athletes, and trail users along the Piney Creek Trail system.
- Spring Creek Park: These restrooms are situated near the athletic fields and open space areas, ideal for teams, spectators, and families attending practices, games, or picnics.
Both parks are community favorites for walking, running, biking, and family play — and now they’re even more inviting through all four seasons.
Adults have multiple ways to play at Trails Recreation Center:
- Recreational play & pickup: Show up, rotate in, and meet your new volleyball crew. Perfect for cardio, community, and keeping skills fresh.
- Leagues: Organize a team or join as a free agent—great for consistent competition without the hassle of finding space each week.
- Skills sessions/clinics: If you’re returning to the game or want to refine a specific skill (serve, pass, hit, block), clinics (when offered) offer focused reps with coaching feedback.
Pro tip: Mix a weekly open gym session with periodic clinics—you’ll see your game improve faster and enjoy it more.
What Visitors Can Expect
The upgraded restrooms will follow the same schedule and standards you’ve come to expect during warmer months:
- Open daily, 5:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. (park hours)
- Regularly cleaned and inspected by TPRD’s dedicated Parks Maintenance Team
- Stocked with essential supplies and maintained for safety and comfort
These facilities are designed for year-round reliability, giving visitors one less thing to worry about while they enjoy the outdoors.
Why Year-Round Access Matters
TPRD’s mission is to help our community stay active, connected, and outdoors—and that shouldn’t stop when the weather turns cold. Keeping restrooms open through the winter supports that mission by making it easier for residents to use parks for recreation, relaxation, and wellness all year long.
Here’s why this change is so impactful:
- Encouraging outdoor activity in every season: Colorado’s sunny winter days are perfect for walking, running, or even snow play. Accessible restrooms mean you can stay out longer and enjoy nature without worrying about limited amenities.
- Supporting families and events: Youth sports practices, park programs, and community gatherings often continue year-round. Having reliable facilities nearby improves the overall experience for participants and spectators alike.
- Increasing accessibility: Year-round restrooms ensure that people of all ages and abilities can comfortably use our parks, helping make outdoor spaces more inclusive.
- Enhancing overall visitor experience: Small conveniences—like knowing restrooms are open—help turn casual visitors into regular park users, strengthening community connections and outdoor engagement.
This update may be practical in nature, but its benefits reach every corner of our community.
A Word from Our Parks Team
Behind this change is a hardworking team of Parks staff who take pride in maintaining every trail, field, and restroom across the district. Their dedication ensures that TPRD parks remain safe, beautiful, and welcoming all year long.
“Keeping these restrooms open year-round has been a longtime goal,” said Sean Bowering, TPRD Parks Manager. “We know that people use our parks every single day, no matter the season. This improvement helps make their experience better and more convenient throughout the year.”
The Parks Team will continue to monitor both restroom facilities daily, performing cleaning, stocking, and safety checks. Even during snowstorms or frigid mornings, their behind-the-scenes work helps keep these amenities running smoothly.
Continuing to Improve Your Park Experience
This change is one piece of TPRD’s larger commitment to continuous improvement across our parks system. From facility upgrades and landscape enhancements to expanded recreational opportunities, we’re constantly working to provide the best possible experience for residents and visitors alike.
Future efforts include adding shade structures, improving accessibility features, updating turf and irrigation systems, and maintaining high sustainability standards to ensure our parks remain healthy and vibrant for years to come.
