Tollgate Open Space: 2025 Xeriscape (May Update)
As we move through the spring season, we’re excited to share the progress of the Tollgate Open Space 2025 Xeriscape Project. The goal of this project is to transform the space into a beautiful, water-efficient landscape that is both sustainable and functional for the community. As part of our ongoing efforts to enhance the open space and create a vibrant, environmentally friendly area for all to enjoy, we’re thrilled to update you on the significant progress made during the month of May.
What’s Been Accomplished in May
May has been a month of significant milestones for the 2025 Xeriscape Project at Tollgate Open Space. The team has worked diligently to lay the groundwork for the upcoming stages of the project. Below is an overview of the tasks that have been completed so far:
- Removal of Existing Bluegrass and Earth Grading: One of the first steps in preparing the space for the new xeriscape design was the removal of existing bluegrass. This was a crucial step as it cleared the area for the upcoming installations. The team then graded the Earth to ensure the ground is leveled and ready for the new plant beds, pathways, and other landscaping features. This process is essential for the success of the project, as it sets the foundation for the sustainable landscape to thrive.
- Installation of Crusher Fine Paving: The team also began the installation of crusher fine paving. This durable and water-efficient material is an integral part of the xeriscape design. Crusher fine paving helps to reduce water usage by allowing rainwater to seep into the ground, while also creating attractive, easy-to-maintain walkways throughout the space. The paving will help define the pathways and enhance the aesthetic appeal of the area.
- Irrigation System Work for New Plant Beds: To support the new xeriscape plantings, the irrigation system was worked on during May. Installing an efficient irrigation system is essential for ensuring that the new plants receive the right amount of water while conserving resources. The irrigation system has been designed to focus on low-water plants and will help to maintain the xeriscape’s health and vibrancy with minimal water usage.
- Installation of Boulder and Benches: A key element of the project has been the installation of boulders and benches throughout the space. These elements not only enhance the natural beauty of the area but also provide opportunities for visitors to rest and enjoy the surroundings. The strategically placed boulders add texture and visual interest, while the benches offer a peaceful spot to sit and relax, making the open space more accessible and enjoyable for all.
- New Plants, Topsoil, and Seating: As part of the final touches for the May phase of the project, new plants were added, along with topsoil to help the plants thrive in their new environment. The plants chosen for the xeriscape are drought-tolerant and well-suited to the region’s climate, ensuring that the landscape remains sustainable and low-maintenance. Additionally, seating areas have been installed to encourage community members to gather, relax, and connect with nature in the newly landscaped space.
Looking Ahead
While significant progress has been made this month, the project is far from complete. As we move into the summer months, there are still several important tasks to complete, including the final touches on the plant beds, additional paving, and ongoing irrigation adjustments.
We’re excited to continue transforming Tollgate Open Space into a sustainable, water-efficient landscape that not only enhances the natural beauty of the area but also provides a functional space for community engagement. As always, we will keep the community updated on the next steps and progress throughout the rest of the year.
Why Xeriscaping?
For those who are new to the concept of xeriscaping, it is a landscaping method that focuses on water conservation by using drought-resistant plants, efficient irrigation systems, and hardscaping elements. Xeriscaping is ideal for areas like Tollgate Open Space, where water conservation is essential, and the goal is to create an environmentally friendly space that is beautiful and easy to maintain.
This project is part of our broader efforts to make our community spaces more sustainable and resource-efficient, ensuring that future generations can continue to enjoy them for years to come.
