Copperleaf Parcel Planning Session 2
Parks play a pivotal role in enhancing the quality of life in any community, providing a haven for relaxation, recreation, and social interaction. Behind the scenes of the lush greenery and vibrant playgrounds lies a meticulous process known as park parcel planning. This blog serves as an update for the ongoing park planning process for Copperleaf Parcel.
The Meeting
On November 15th, 2023, the Copperleaf Parcel Planning Session 2 was held at the Trails Recreation Center to update the community on the direction for the park in Copperleaf Neighborhood. This planning was open to the community and was designed to help us understand the community’s needs, preferences, and expectations for the proposed park. Steam Landscape Architect and Planning, in conjunction with Trails Park and Recreations District, presented three different design concepts to the public to gather feedback and thoughts on the proposals; these designs were based on ideas presented at the first Copperleaf Planning Session back in August of 2023.
The Planning
When we first heard from the Copperleaf community about what they wanted, we got a lot of responses. Stream then took that information when they examined the parcel of land to determine what was actually feasible. They took into account factors such as size of the parcel, topography, traffic patterns, nearby parks in existence, and existing flora and fauna.
They then created three parks with different functional zoning designs. Functional zoning allocates specific areas for various activities, such as playgrounds, sports fields, walking trails, picnic areas, and more. The goal is to create a harmonious blend of recreational opportunities that cater to different age groups and interests within the community.
The Concepts
The first park concept was titled “Community Hub.” This was designed to make the park more of a community hang-out location that could include a picnic shelter, open spaces for community gatherings, restrooms, a social plaza, bike course, lawn games area, and event lawn.Â
Concept two was titled “Play Focus.” This was designed to make the park more of a go-to location for recreation. It could include a splash pad, sport fields (like a soccer field and baseball diamond), lawn game area, playground, basketball courts, walking paths, and restrooms.
The last park concept presented was a “Natural Park.” This was designed to blend into the current landscaping and shrubbery. It featured items like nature paths, fitness circuit, boardwalk crossing, play path with natural-looking climbing structures, and a creek interface.
The Next Steps
Stream then asked for feedback as to what amenities people like best, what themes would best serve the community, and where they wanted parking. A feedback survey was also presented (though it is now closed) and Stream is currently working to gather the data to present a final master plan to present to the public.
We will shortly be announcing what the Copperleaf Parcel park will look like, and ask for your patience as this project continues underway. We will also release periodic updates and an expected completion timeline once we know more. Thank you for your participation in the planning sessions, your survey feedback, and your assistance it helping Trails Park and Recreation District continue to grow and expand in the community.
