Behind the Build: September 2003

Welcome back to Behind the Build, our monthly series celebrating the 20th anniversary of the Trails Recreation Center! In August, we overcame a series of delays to begin critical site work, and by September 2003, the project was finally in full swing. Let’s dive into the exciting progress made throughout this pivotal month.

Stabilizing the Creek and Prepping the Ground

With bank stabilization underway since August 15, work around Piney Creek continued to progress smoothly in September. Crews placed the final sections of rock along the creek’s edge, ensuring the area was fortified for the long term. Overlot grading of the site was completed, transforming what was once uneven ground into a solid foundation for the upcoming construction.

Installing the Backbone: Underground Utilities

September 2003 was all about infrastructure. Storm sewer inlets were installed, and work on the underground utilities moved quickly. Water and natural gas mains were laid into place, providing the necessary connections for the future rec center. These hidden elements may not be as flashy as some aspects of construction, but they’re absolutely vital to the building’s functionality. It was satisfying to see the site’s backbone start to take shape below ground.

Foundations and Framework Begin to Rise

Above ground, the visible transformation was just as exciting. The foundation walls for the rec center were formed, rebar placed, and after the concrete was poured, the forms were stripped, and backfilling around the foundation walls began. With this critical step completed, the project moved toward structural steel work. In fact, September marked the arrival of the first steel deliveries on-site—an exciting preview of the framework that would soon rise from the ground.

Curbs, Gutters, and More

September 2003 also saw the start of curb and gutter installation, adding shape to the surrounding landscape. These elements began to outline the infrastructure of the site, signaling that the Trails Recreation Center was moving closer to becoming a reality.

What’s Next?

With September’s progress, the building was well on its way to rising above ground. From underground utilities to structural steel and foundation work, this month laid a critical foundation (pun intended!) for the facility’s future.

Join us next month as we continue our journey Behind the Build. October promises even more visible progress as steel rises and more groundwork is laid!
