Behind the Build: January 2004
Welcome back to Behind the Build as we kick off 2004 with a flurry of construction activity! Our last post in 2003 highlighted how the building was finally beginning to take shape. January was all about moving forward despite winter weather, and the team made incredible progress on multiple fronts. From concrete pours to pool excavation, and even the start of masonry work, the Trails Recreation Center was growing inside and out. Let’s dive into the highlights from this busy month.
Concrete Pours and Weather Protection
Winter didn’t slow things down thanks to weather protection measures that allowed for continued concrete pours. Interior concrete slabs on grade were poured, along with the second-floor concrete fill on the metal deck. This solidified the floors and allowed work to move upward and forward throughout the building.
Pools Taking Shape
One of the most exciting developments in January 2004 was the excavation of the leisure and lap pools. The concrete sub-slabs were poured for both pools, marking the start of the aquatic center that would become a centerpiece of the recreation facility. The locker rooms also saw major underground work, including the installation of plumbing and ductwork.
Masonry and Structural Progress
On the exterior, January saw the beginning of masonry work on the building, adding a new layer of stability and visual progress. The gymnasium’s exterior steel studs and sheeting were installed, and concrete was poured for the gym floor, giving this key space its final shape. The running track’s structural steel and decking were also in progress, and it was exciting to see these highly anticipated features coming to life.
Roofing, Fireproofing, and More
Roofing activities were in full swing, with tongue-and-groove wood roof decking, plywood sheathing, and roof blocking all in progress. Meanwhile, fireproofing was applied to the structural steel throughout the building, ensuring safety and longevity. Inside, the installation of steel stairs began, providing access to the facility’s upper levels.
Ductwork, Electrical, and Sprinklers
January 2004 also saw extensive work on the building’s internal systems. Ductwork installation continued on the second floor, and interior metal studs were in place to divide up future rooms. Electrical rough-ins and the installation of fire sprinkler piping were well underway, helping to set the stage for the next phase of interior finishes.
Piney Creek and Site Work
Beyond the building itself, Arapahoe County installed drop structures for Piney Creek, continuing the necessary work to stabilize the area and protect the site from future erosion. The team also focused on site preparation, ensuring the surrounding land was ready for the next phases of development.
What’s Next?
With foundations solidified, pools excavated, and walls rising, January brought us closer to the finished Trails Recreation Center. Every month brings exciting new developments, and February promises more big steps forward.
Stay tuned for the next edition of Behind the Build as we continue the journey through 2004!
