Behind the Build: February 2004

Last month we talked about the beginnings of building construction. February 2004 may have been a short month, but construction at the Trails Recreation Center was anything but slow! Progress was steady across multiple areas, from masonry work to pool preparation, and even the installation of key systems like electrical and fire sprinklers. This month also saw the exciting arrival of the Myrtha pool parts, bringing us one step closer to a fully functional aquatic center. Let’s dive into the updates from this bustling month.

Masonry and Exterior Finishes Move Forward

The building’s exterior continued to take shape throughout February with the ongoing masonry work. Both the interior and exterior masonry progressed, giving the structure more definition and durability. On top of that, crews began installing the Exterior Insulation Finishing System (EIFS), which would provide insulation and an attractive, weather-resistant finish to the outside walls. This phase was an important step in preparing the building for the Colorado elements.

High Bay Lights and Electrical Work

Inside the gym, the installation of high bay light fixtures gave the space its first hints of illumination. These powerful lights would ensure that the gymnasium is well-lit for future activities, from basketball games to fitness classes. In addition, the electrical rough-ins were in full swing throughout the facility. One major milestone was the delivery and installation of the electrical switchgear, a key component in powering the building’s electrical systems.

Running Track Progress

Up on the second floor, the running track was starting to take form. Metal decking was installed, allowing this highly anticipated feature to move closer to completion. The running track, with its view over the gym and other areas, would soon offer visitors a unique space for indoor exercise.

Pools and Climbing Wall Make Progress

Excitement was high in February 2004 as the Myrtha pool parts arrived on-site, ready for installation. These parts are designed to create state-of-the-art swimming pools, offering a high-quality, durable solution for the rec center’s aquatic spaces. Meanwhile, reinforcing steel was installed for the leisure pool, and the locker room floors were prepped and poured with concrete. Another thrilling update was the installation of the structural steel for the climbing wall, which would become a major attraction in the finished facility.

Stairs, Fire Sprinklers, and More

Steel stair installation continued throughout the building, providing access to the upper levels. Fire safety systems were also a major focus, with the ongoing installation of fire sprinkler piping throughout the structure. These systems are crucial for ensuring the safety of future visitors and staff.

What’s Next?

February 2004 brought us closer to the final vision of the Trails Recreation Center, with key systems in place, pools prepped, and walls rising. As we move into the spring months, expect even more exciting developments!

Stay tuned for the next edition of Behind the Build, as we continue to follow the progress of this incredible facility!
