Behind the Build: December 2003
Welcome back to Behind the Build, where we continue our journey through the construction of the Trails Recreation Center. We’re moving forward a month from November’s blog to December 2003, which brought major milestones as the building’s structure reached new heights and essential systems began to take shape. Let’s take a closer look at how the final month of the year wrapped up with incredible progress.
Foundation and Framework Completed
One of the biggest accomplishments of December was the completion of the building’s foundation. With this critical work now finished, the construction team could focus entirely on building up and out. The structural steel and wood truss erection also reached 100% completion, marking the end of one of the most visually impactful phases of construction. Now, the framework for the gym, main areas, and future water slide tower stood tall on-site, offering a clear picture of the facility’s future layout.
Piney Creek Bridge Installed
Another key development in December was the installation of the Piney Creek bridge. With the abutments already completed in November, December saw the bridge fully installed. This provided a direct connection to the recreation center and solidified the site’s accessibility. It was an exciting moment, as the bridge was a key feature for both the construction process and the community’s future access to the center.
Roof and Walls Taking Shape
The exterior of the building was also making significant strides in December 2003. Metal roof decking continued to go up, while exterior metal stud framing and sheathing moved forward quickly. These elements brought a more complete, enclosed look to the building and offered protection for the ongoing work inside.
Plumbing, Electrical, and HVAC Work in Progress
Inside the building, the underground plumbing and electrical installations were nearing completion, and crews began work on the main HVAC ductwork. The first sections of ductwork were installed, ensuring that the rec center would be properly heated and ventilated in the future. Meanwhile, slab-on-grade concrete pours were in progress, helping to set the stage for the facility’s interior spaces.
Looking Ahead
December wrapped up 2003 with the Trails Recreation Center’s structure standing tall, its exterior taking shape, and vital internal systems well underway. From the foundation to the rooftop, the building was moving steadily toward completion.
Join us next month for our first Behind the Build post of 2004, where we’ll continue tracking the rec center’s exciting progress. Stay tuned as we enter the new year with even more milestones ahead!
